Tom Brown is a freelance investigative reporter with a research focus on ways that interactive journalism can contribute to local news.

Tom led a six-month investigation into oil flaring in Kurdistan, sponsored by the Environmental Reporting Collective and published by Al Jazeera, utilising satellite data to expose gas flaring in Iraq alongside MIT researchers and Pulitzer Center journalists.

With the help of a bachelor's degree in English Literature with Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia, Tom’s debut novel The Oblivious Pool hit shelves in the UK, the US and Australia in 2022.

In an investigative project, Tom worked with inmates at Norwich HMP while at University, interviewing prison staff as well as the prisoners themselves about their experiences.

Throughout his career, Tom has dedicated his reporting towards environmental causes, starting from my local reporting on Saudi Weapons agreements, to his financial journalism tackling the carbon credit market and ESG investment.

After working at the award-winning Concrete Magazine at the University of East Anglia, he undertook a NCTJ qualification at Brighton Journalist Works, achieving the gold standard on a fast track course with 100wpm shorthand.

Tom is fluent in Spanish, German, and Arabic. He is proficient in the Adobe Suite, along with film-editing software.
